Load shedding Cape Town lookup tool updated
The loadshedding lookup tool for Cape Town has been updated! You can now select your suburb by name, and the schedule will switch to the new, updated 16-day rotational schedule automatically on 1 Feb 2015. The tools tells you when you will be load shed by day of the week (on the old schedule) and day of the month (on the new schedule) based on the area, and stage (stage 1, 2, 3a and 3b) of load shedding. This tool is *only* applicable to areas supplied by the Cape Town municipality, i.e. if you buy electricity from the City of Cape Town, or receive an invoice from said municipality.
If you are an Eskom direct consumer, you’ll have to visit the Eskom load shedding schedule.
The Cape Town area is divided into 16 zones for load shedding that are scheduled to be switched off for approx 2.5hrs in a load shedding period. Based on the need on the grid, there may be more than one period a day of load shedding, but typically not more than three.
The areas are not cleanly divided by suburbs, and in some cases, suburbs span more than one area. Be sure you #knowyourarea, as the time slots that you are meant to be shed may be different to the ones you were expecting. The old and new schedules have a slight discrepancy in areas, but you can see them in detail here:
The Cape Town load shedding schedule tool had broadly defined suburbs listed for your convenience, and some suburbs are listed twice as they span more than one area.
[update: 26 Feb] Geolocation added, though areas still overlap…
Subject to change
The times and areas are based on information as in the public domain – details are subject to change without notice, depending on need, municipality and updates. Information should be seen as a guideline that corresponds to the best-effort information available, and the tool provides a convenient lookup that is otherwise available by going directly to the grid-based lookup schedules on the CoCT load shedding page.
The system is built on the Bootstrap framework, and should thus work on any mobile, tablet or computer, Mac, Linux or Windows, at all resolutions.
